MediaTek Pump Express (PE)

MediaTek develops Helio and Dimensity system-on-chip platforms used in many smartphones. For devices using MediaTek platforms, the company developed the Pump Express family of fast-charging technologies. MediaTek listed Sony, Lenovo, Gionee, and Meizu among manufacturers that used Pump Express 2.0.

Pump Express versions:

• Pump Express Plus (PE+) supports fixed voltage levels of 5V, 7V, 9V, and 12V. MediaTek documentation specifies 1.5-2A and up to 24W at 12V for this version; later materials list support for up to 3A. Voltage negotiation is performed using VBUS current modulation.

• Pump Express 2.0 adjusts voltage from 5-20V in 0.5V increments. MediaTek documentation specifies up to 3A in a single-channel configuration and more than 4.5A in a parallel configuration, with commands transmitted using VBUS current modulation.

• Pump Express 3.0 uses direct battery charging over USB Type-C. USB PD is used for communication between the device and the adapter. MediaTek specifications list 3-6V with 10-20mV increments, 5A+ current, and approximately 95% efficiency. MediaTek claimed charging from 0 to 70% in about 20 minutes.

• Pump Express 4.0 is designed for USB-C and is compatible with USB PD 3.0 PPS (Programmable Power Supply), supporting up to 5A. It does not require a proprietary USB-C cable. Pump Express Wireless is a separate MediaTek wireless-charging technology.
